3 ways to protect your Asphalt Pavement.

Asphalt pavement sometimes called black top is made mostly of coarse and fine aggregates and a binder. The aggregates are mostly made up of sand, crushed and fine gravel and crushed and fine rocks.  The combination of aggregates all depends on what type of surface area the asphalt pavement is being used for, for example a busy road would use a difference combination of aggregates versus a small traffic road or parking lot.

Asphalt pavement can last decades depending on how well it is cared for and maintained.  But when asphalt pavement isn't cared for some of the biggest offenders to asphalt pavement is both extreme cold and extreme heat.

Since we can't control the weather, how can we ensure our asphalt pavement lasts us decades? Take note of these tips:

1. Fill Cracks & Repair Potholes

As soon as you spot weak points in your pavement, be sure to tend to them right away using a crack sealer and filling potholes to maintain the strength and integrity of your pavement surface. Take note of any areas where water is pooling and draining. These areas can create long term damage so be sure to attend to these areas and amend for better draining.

2. De-icing Products

De-icing products are a necessity in the winter to aid in traction and keeping a lot clear and clean of snow.  Be sure to choose a de-icing product that isn't damaging on your asphalt pavement. So what should you go with? Try a product that uses sodium chloride or calcium chloride. Just like any surface, whether asphalt or concrete, less is more to keep your surface protected from long term damage.

3. Seal Coating

Apply an asphalt sealer to help extend the longevity of your pavement's lifespan.  An asphalt sealer helps to protect your pavement from heat, oxidation and prevents moisture from building up in the tiny cracks in your pavement surface.
